Tensions Rise as NLC Leader Ajaero Responds to Police Summons
Tensions escalate in Abuja as NLC President Joe Ajaero prepares for police questioning related to alleged terrorism financing charges.

A tense ambiance exists in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and different states of Nigeria as Joe Ajaero, the head of Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), is about to answer to the police summons today, Thursday.
This situation is due as the NLC declared its move to start a nationwide solidarity campaign in spite of police summons of Ajaero on the allegations of terrorism financing.
Information concerning this action was communicated in a letter sent by Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC’s General Secretary, on Wednesday.

The NLC has called on its affiliates and state councils to get their members to Abuja and all over the country to support Ajaero.
“Our President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been summoned by the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday, August 29, 2024, for questioning over baseless charges, and we are calling on all affiliates of the NLC and state councils to mobilize their members in Abuja and across all states to show their solidarity in this situation regardless of the outcome,” the notice states.
Gathering is instructed at NLC National Headquarters at 8 am gather at the NLC National Headquarters on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to accompany Ajaero to the police for the scheduled questioning in Abuja.
It is worth emphasizing that the police had sent Ajaero a previous summons on August 20, 2024, concerning accusations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony.
Nevertheless, Ajaero, through his legal representative, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, made a request to delay the meeting until August 29 because of a conflicting schedule. The police invitation comes on the heel of a recent raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja, where authorities were looking for materials said to be seditious in relation to the recent #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.
