Mindfulness

The Awesome Power of Mindfulness   Be mindful. Be grateful. Be positive. Be true. Be kind.” ― Roy T. Bennett I belong to a Readers and Writers club, and once every month, we hold our ‘rob minds session’, where we discuss the books we have read or reading at the moment and the lessons we learnt.   One of the best books I ever read was, ‘The Monk Who sold His Ferrari’ by Robin Sharma. I was so excited and mentally stimulated, when the book was the subject of discussion by one of the members in our April, 2024, edition.   The book is about the story of a super star lawyer, who’s out of life balance, in the quest of chasing the American dream, lead to his collapse in the courtroom, an incident that turned his life around, as He eventually abandoned, the luxuries of the luxurious life (the fast cars, the nice suits, the flashing lights of night clubs, the women and the niceties of life) as He left all behind in search of new meaning and purpose in the Himalayas Mountain.   One of the greatest lessons I learnt from the book, was the need for us to know ourselves as it is in knowing ourselves that we can know the world around us. It was Epictetus who said ‘No man is free who is not a master of himself.   And one of the ways we can know ourselves is by asking of questions, as questions are the most effective method of eliciting knowledge. I am not here today to tickle you or tell or teach you the ways and means of a monk, or encourage you to abandoned all you have built or building and relocate into the thick mountainous forest in search or ancient sages that will help you discover meaning and purpose of life, neither I am here to give you 21 reasons why or how to become a monk.   Rather, for the purposes of this post, I will be looking at ways and methods we can adopt, on how we can integrate mindfulness into our lives and ultimately, ride on the waves of harnessing the awesomeness of the powers of mindfulness.   Integrating mindfulness into our daily lives can have numerous benefits for reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being. When we improve our inner well-being, we will then be able to build the inner power and character full of self-discipline, energy, power and optimism. mindfulness If I may ask, how will a person be able to lead a great corporation for instance, if they cannot lead themselves? Or how can someone run and nurture their family, if they have not learnt how to nurture themselves?  And how can one possibly do good for humanity, if they don’t even feel good?   So the most effective way to do any of the above is through the practise of continuous self- awareness and improvement, as self -mastery is the DNA of life mastery. So if mindfulness, which ultimately leads to self-mastery is full of awesomeness, how then can one develop and practise mindfulness? Here are some practical tips and techniques to help you incorporate mindfulness into your everyday routines:
  1. Start your day mindfully
Every beginning started at the beginning, so it is very important to begin your day with a few moments of mindfulness before you even get out of bed. You might call it meditation, or soul communion, or deep calling unto deep, whatever the nomenclature, simply take a few deep breaths, set your intentions for the day, and notice any sensations in your body without judgment.
  1. Mindful morning routines
There is a funny saying in my place, that if you are offered a full scholarship to study, meaning you will not have to pay anything with regards to tuition, feeding and books, to even clothing, but to fully benefit from the scholarship, you must pay attention in class. So pay attention to each step of your morning routine, whether it is brushing your teeth, taking a shower, or making breakfast. Engage fully in each activity rather than rushing through it mindlessly.
  1. Mindful eating
It is not what you eat, but rather, what is eating you they say that matters. So instead of eating on autopilot, take the time to savour each bite of your meals. Notice the flavours, textures, and smells of your food. Chew slowly and pay attention to how your body feels as you eat.
  1. Mindful movement
It is extremely important to incorporate mindfulness into your exercise routine by focusing on your breath and the sensations in your body as you move. Whether you are walking, running, or practicing yoga, bring your full awareness to the present moment.
  1. Mindful breaks
There is a routine I have developed over the years, which I call mind emptying, where I just seat still for at least 10 minutes without thinking about anything. Take short mindfulness breaks throughout your day to pause and reset. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and bring your attention to the present moment. This can help you stay centered and focused, even during busy times.
  1. Mindful communication
As humans we sometimes have the tendency to be in charge of the conversation. So beyond talking; listen. Beyond taking; give. And listening does not mean the sounds hitting your eardrums. Practice mindful listening and speaking in your interactions with others. Pay attention to what the other person is saying without interrupting or planning your response. When you speak, do so with intention and kindness.
  1. Mindful technology use
If you don’t control technology, technology will control you and turn you into a zombie or a dummy. Be mindful of how you use technology throughout the day. Take breaks from screens and notice how you feel when you are not constantly connected. Set boundaries around your device use to create space for mindfulness.
  1. Mindful evening rituals
And on the 7th day, God rested… Even though because of the earth’s rotation, the Sun never goes down, but we all experience sun sets in our own corners of the earth. So wind down (sun-set) at the end of the day with mindful activities like journaling, meditation, or gentle stretching. Reflect on the events of the day with compassion and gratitude.
  1. Mindful bedtime
It is very important not to rush into bed at the end of every-day. Spend some time to practice mindfulness as you prepare for sleep by creating a calming bedtime routine. Turn off screens an hour before bed, dim the lights, and engage in relaxing activities like reading or listening to soothing music.
  1. Mindful reflection
The mirror does not define, it only reflects. Take time at the end of each day to reflect on your experiences with curiosity and compassion. Notice any moments of mindfulness throughout the day and consider how you can cultivate more mindfulness in the days to come.   Practising mindfulness is a skill that takes a lot of time to master. However, mastering it requires discipline and discipline is like a wire cable. The tiny wires of the cable on their own are very weak, but it is each joining on top each other that makes it an iron steel. So practise the tiny wire acts of discipline daily and over time, you will enjoy the benefits of steel disciple. According to an African proverb, ‘when spider webs combine, they can tie up a lion’   Remember that mindfulness is a skill that takes practice, so be patient with yourself as you integrate these techniques into your daily life. Over time, you may find that mindfulness becomes a natural and effortless part of your routine, leading to greater peace and well-being.

Breaking News: Peter Obi Laments Demolition of Brother’s Property in Lagos

Published

on

Property demolition in Lagos, Lagos State demolition laws, Ethnic tensions in Lagos, Illegal demolition Nigeria

The recent demolition of a property belonging to the brother of Peter Obi, a prominent Nigerian political figure, has sparked widespread concern and debate across Lagos State. Occurring on June 25, 2025, this incident has brought to light critical issues surrounding property rights, legal procedures, and ethnic tensions in Nigeria’s bustling commercial hub. As the news unfolds, it is essential to explore the context, legality, and broader implications of this event to understand its impact on individuals and communities.

The Incident: What Happened?

On the morning of June 25, 2025, images emerged showing the partial demolition of a building in Lagos, identified as a business property owned by Peter Obi’s brother. The structure, reduced to rubble with debris scattered across the site, featured a man standing amid the wreckage, highlighting the human toll of the event. Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, has publicly lamented the demolition, asserting that no legal demolition order was presented prior to the action. This claim aligns with recurring complaints about unauthorized demolitions in Lagos, a city known for its rapid urban development and stringent land-use policies.

The lack of transparency regarding the demolition order has fueled speculation about the motives behind the action. Contractors involved reportedly failed to provide documentation justifying the demolition, a detail that echoes past incidents documented in local reports. For instance, a 2020 investigation by Vanguard Nigeria highlighted similar cases where demolitions led to loss of life and community displacement, often without proper legal backing.

Legal Context and Historical Patterns

Nigeria operates under a legal framework that requires government authorities to follow due process before demolishing properties. The Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of 2015 mandates that property owners receive notice and an opportunity to appeal before any demolition takes place. However, historical data suggests this law is frequently bypassed. A 2020 study published in the Journal of African Law found that 68% of demolition cases in Lagos lacked adequate legal documentation, pointing to a systemic issue within the state’s urban planning enforcement.

This pattern dates back decades. The infamous 1989 Maroko demolition, where approximately 300,000 people were displaced, serves as a stark reminder of the state’s history of contentious property clearances. Despite legal challenges, such as the Samuel Ayeyemi case cited by The Nation Newspaper, the Lagos State government has continued these practices, often targeting properties in informal settlements or those owned by politically vocal individuals.

Ethnic Tensions and Political Undertones

The demolition has also reignited discussions about ethnic dynamics in Lagos, particularly concerning the Igbo community, to which Peter Obi belongs. The Igboezue International Association issued a 2024 statement warning President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu about rising anti-Igbo sentiments, a concern that gained traction during the 2023 elections when Obi’s candidacy stirred regional rivalries. Some observers suggest the demolition could be politically motivated, targeting Obi due to his opposition status and influence among Igbo residents in Lagos.

This perspective is supported by the historical context of ethnic relations in Nigeria. According to the Nigerian Civil War documentation on Wikipedia, ethnic tensions between the Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, and Yoruba communities have long influenced political and economic power struggles, a dynamic that persists in modern urban centers like Lagos. The current incident may reflect these underlying tensions, raising questions about fairness and equity in property rights enforcement.

Implications for Property Owners

For residents and property owners in Lagos, this event underscores the vulnerability of investments in a city where urban renewal often clashes with individual rights. The Nigeria Housing Market website advises property owners to regularize documentation and seek legal support to protect against unexpected demolitions. This incident serves as a wake-up call, urging individuals to verify land titles and engage with community initiatives aimed at securing legal protections.

The emotional and financial distress caused by such demolitions cannot be overstated. Families lose homes, businesses collapse, and livelihoods are disrupted, often with little recourse. This case highlights the need for stronger oversight and accountability within Lagos State’s planning authorities to balance development goals with resident welfare.

Moving Forward: What Can Be Done?

Addressing the root causes of unlawful demolitions requires a multi-faceted approach:

  1. Enforce Transparency: The Lagos State government must ensure all demolition orders are publicly documented and accessible.
  2. Legal Representation: Property owners should be given adequate notice and legal representation, aligning with the 2015 Urban Planning Law.
  3. Community Advocacy: Community advocacy groups and legal aid organizations can play a pivotal role in supporting affected individuals.

For Peter Obi and his family, pursuing legal action may be the next step to seek justice and compensation. Broader societal dialogue about ethnic harmony and equitable governance is also crucial to prevent future incidents from being perceived as targeted attacks.

Conclusion

The demolition of Peter Obi’s brother’s property in Lagos on June 25, 2025, is more than an isolated event. It is a reflection of deeper challenges in Nigeria’s urban planning, legal enforcement, and ethnic relations. As the city continues to grow, balancing development with the rights of its diverse population remains a pressing issue. By learning from this incident, stakeholders can work toward a future where property demolitions are conducted fairly, transparently, and with respect for all residents.

The $300 Helicopter Landing Levy on Oil Companies: Economic Impacts and Industry Controversy

$300 Helicopter Landing Levy: Impact on Oil Firms

In May 2025, the Nigerian Federal Government reinstated a $300 helicopter landing levy for oil companies operating offshore, shifting the financial burden from helicopter operators to the oil giants themselves. This decision, announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has sparked heated debates across the oil and gas sector, with stakeholders raising concerns about its potential to increase operational costs and, consequently, the prices of petroleum products like petrol and diesel.

Let us delve into the details of this controversial fee, its implications for oil companies, the economy, and consumers, and the broader context of its implementation. By exploring the perspectives of industry players, government intentions, and economic ramifications, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of this contentious policy.

Understanding the Helicopter Landing Levy

The helicopter landing levy is a $300 per-landing charge imposed on oil companies for helicopter operations at offshore oil platforms in Nigeria. Initially, this fee was borne by helicopter operators, but the government’s decision to transfer the cost to oil companies has stirred significant controversy. The policy aims to streamline aviation revenue collection and ensure that the financial responsibility aligns with the primary beneficiaries of offshore operations—namely, the oil companies. According to posts on X, this levy was reinstated to enhance the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s aviation sector, with the government arguing that oil companies, as major players in the industry, should shoulder the cost due to their substantial profits.

The Nigerian aviation policy behind this levy reflects a broader effort to modernize and regulate the aviation industry, which supports critical operations in Nigeria’s oil-rich offshore regions. Helicopters are essential for transporting personnel and equipment to offshore rigs, making them a linchpin of offshore operations. However, the additional cost of $300 per landing could accumulate significantly, given the frequency of helicopter trips in the oil and gas industry. For context, a single offshore platform may require multiple daily helicopter landings, potentially adding thousands of dollars in daily expenses for oil companies.

Why the Levy Is Controversial

The reinstatement of the helicopter landing levy has been met with mixed reactions. Industry stakeholders, particularly oil companies, argue that this fee could exacerbate the already high operational costs in Nigeria’s oil sector. The levy comes at a time when oil companies are grappling with global market fluctuations, regulatory pressures, and the need to invest in sustainable energy transitions. According to a report shared on X, there are concerns that the additional cost could lead to higher petroleum prices, as oil companies may pass the financial burden onto consumers.

Critics question the purpose of the levy, with some stakeholders labeling it as an unnecessary tax that could undermine Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global oil market. For instance, posts on X highlight concerns that the fee may discourage investment in Nigeria’s offshore oil sector, as companies could seek more cost-effective regions for exploration and production. Additionally, the lack of transparency regarding how the collected funds will be utilized has fueled skepticism. Some industry players speculate that the levy is a revenue-generating mechanism for the government rather than a policy aimed at improving aviation infrastructure or safety.

On the other hand, proponents of the levy, including government officials, argue that it is a fair measure to ensure that oil companies contribute to the maintenance of aviation infrastructure. Helicopters operating in offshore environments rely on government-regulated helipads, air traffic control, and safety protocols, all of which require funding. By shifting the cost to oil companies, the government aims to reduce the financial strain on helicopter operators, potentially stabilizing the aviation sector and encouraging competition among service providers.

Economic Implications for Oil Companies

The helicopter landing levy directly impacts the cost structure of oil companies operating in Nigeria’s offshore fields. Offshore operations are inherently expensive due to the logistical challenges of working in remote marine environments. Helicopters are a critical component of these operations, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of personnel and supplies. The introduction of a $300 per-landing fee adds a new layer of expense, particularly for companies with high-frequency helicopter operations.

For example, a major oil company operating multiple offshore rigs could face dozens of helicopter landings daily. At $300 per landing, this could translate to tens of thousands of dollars in additional weekly costs. Over time, these expenses could erode profit margins, especially for smaller oil companies or those operating in less profitable fields. The cumulative effect of the levy may force companies to reevaluate their operational strategies, potentially leading to reduced exploration activities or cost-cutting measures such as layoffs or reduced investment in local communities.

Moreover, the levy could have a ripple effect on offshore operations beyond direct costs. Oil companies may seek to negotiate lower fees with helicopter operators or reduce the frequency of flights, which could compromise operational efficiency or safety. Alternatively, some companies may explore alternative transportation methods, such as marine vessels, though these are often slower and less practical for personnel transport.

Impact on Petroleum Prices and Consumers

One of the most significant concerns surrounding the helicopter landing levy is its potential to drive up petroleum prices. Nigeria, as one of Africa’s largest oil producers, plays a critical role in the global energy market. However, the domestic market is highly sensitive to cost increases, as most Nigerians rely on petrol and diesel for transportation, power generation, and industrial activities. A post on X highlighted fears that the levy could lead to higher fuel prices, as oil companies may pass on the additional costs to consumers.

The potential for price hikes is particularly concerning given Nigeria’s economic challenges, including inflation and currency depreciation. Higher petroleum prices could exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis, impacting households, businesses, and the broader economy. For instance, increased fuel costs could lead to higher transportation fares, elevated prices for goods and services, and reduced purchasing power for consumers. This, in turn, could dampen economic growth and fuel public discontent, especially if the government fails to demonstrate tangible benefits from the levy.

Government’s Rationale and Industry Response

The Nigerian aviation policy behind the levy reflects the government’s broader goal of diversifying revenue streams and reducing dependence on oil exports. By imposing the helicopter landing levy, the government aims to generate funds to support aviation infrastructure, including helipads, air traffic control systems, and safety regulations. According to Minister Keyamo, the policy ensures that oil companies, which benefit significantly from Nigeria’s natural resources, contribute to the upkeep of critical infrastructure.

However, the oil industry has pushed back against the levy, arguing that it adds to an already complex regulatory environment. Nigeria’s oil sector is subject to multiple taxes, royalties, and fees, which some companies claim make the country less attractive for investment compared to other oil-producing nations. The levy could further strain relationships between the government and oil companies, potentially leading to reduced foreign direct investment in the sector.

Industry stakeholders have also called for greater clarity on how the levy will be implemented and how the funds will be allocated. Without transparent mechanisms to ensure that the revenue is reinvested into aviation infrastructure, there is a risk that the policy will be perceived as a cash grab rather than a strategic initiative to support the industry.

Broader Context: Balancing Economic Growth and Industry Competitiveness

The helicopter landing levy must be viewed within the broader context of Nigeria’s economic and energy policies. The country is navigating a delicate balance between maximizing revenue from its oil and gas sector and maintaining competitiveness in a global market increasingly focused on renewable energy. While the levy may generate short-term revenue, its long-term impact on offshore operations and investor confidence remains uncertain.

To mitigate the controversy, the government could consider engaging with industry stakeholders to address concerns and explore alternative funding models. For example, a tiered fee structure based on the size or profitability of oil companies could reduce the burden on smaller players while still generating revenue. Additionally, investing levy proceeds into visible improvements in aviation safety and infrastructure could help build public and industry support for the policy.

Conclusion

The reinstatement of the $300 helicopter landing levy on oil companies in Nigeria has ignited a firestorm of debate, with far-reaching implications for offshore operations, petroleum prices, and the country’s economic landscape. While the government views the levy as a necessary step to fund aviation infrastructure, oil companies and stakeholders warn of its potential to increase costs and deter investment. As Nigeria navigates this complex issue, transparent communication and stakeholder engagement will be critical to balancing economic growth with industry competitiveness. For now, the Nigerian aviation policy remains a focal point of discussion, with the levy’s long-term impact still unfolding.

By understanding the nuances of this policy and its effects, stakeholders can better prepare for its challenges and opportunities. Whether you are an industry professional, policymaker, or consumer, staying informed about the helicopter landing levy is essential in navigating Nigeria’s evolving oil and gas landscape.

Nyesom Wike’s Dual Role in 2027: Leading PDP Campaign While Championing Tinubu’s Re-Election

Nyesom Wike’s Role in 2027: PDP Leader, Tinubu Ally

Wike’s Bold Political Maneuver for 2027

In a surprising twist that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared his intention to lead the PDP campaign for 2027 while simultaneously positioning himself as an asset to ensure President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the same election cycle. This dual commitment, articulated during a media parley in Abuja on June 2, 2025, underscores Wike’s complex political strategy and his influential role in Rivers State politics.

As a key player in both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government, Wike’s statements have sparked debates about party loyalty, regional power dynamics, and the future of Nigeria’s opposition politics. Let us delve into the implications of Wike’s declarations, his motivations, and the potential impact on the 2027 elections, all while exploring the broader context of his political maneuvering.

Wike’s Pledge to Lead PDP Campaign in 2027

Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and a self-proclaimed stalwart of the PDP, has reaffirmed his commitment to the party despite serving in President Tinubu’s APC-led administration. During a media chat in Abuja, Wike boldly stated, “I am still in PDP. I worked hard for the party. I have not seen anybody who will have the guts to tell me, Wike, you are not a member of the party. Who is that? In fact, I will lead the PDP campaign in 2027 in Rivers.”

This declaration comes amidst ongoing tensions within the PDP, particularly following the party’s loss in the 2023 presidential election and internal divisions exacerbated by Wike’s G-5 group, which worked against the PDP’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in favor of a southern presidency.

Wike’s assertion that he will spearhead the PDP campaign for 2027 in Rivers State highlights his confidence in his political influence in the region. Rivers State has long been a PDP stronghold, and Wike’s tenure as governor solidified his control over the state’s political machinery. His promise to lead the campaign suggests an intent to maintain his grip on the PDP’s structure in Rivers, even as he navigates his role in the APC-led government. However, this move has raised questions about his loyalty, with critics like PDP youth spokesperson Dare Glintstone Akinniyi accusing Wike of undermining the party to ensure Tinubu’s re-election.

Wike as an Asset for Tinubu’s Re-Election

In the same breath, Wike has openly declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, vowing to lead Tinubu’s campaign in both the FCT and Rivers State. He stated, “Are you not aware I will lead his campaign in Rivers State? You want me to say no? Are you not aware that he did not get up to 10 percent here, FCT? But he will win here.” This bold prediction reflects Wike’s belief in his ability to sway voters in key regions, leveraging his political clout and strategic alliances.

Wike’s support for Tinubu is rooted in his advocacy for a southern presidency, a principle he championed during the 2023 elections when he and the G-5 governors opposed Atiku Abubakar’s candidacy, arguing that the PDP’s presidential ticket should have been zoned to the South. His appointment as FCT Minister by Tinubu has further cemented this alliance, with Wike enjoying significant financial autonomy and influence in the APC-led government. Political analysts suggest that Wike’s role in Tinubu’s administration is strategic, aimed at weakening the PDP’s opposition while bolstering Tinubu’s chances in 2027.

Wike’s dual role as a PDP member and a Tinubu supporter has drawn criticism from within the PDP. Some party members view his actions as anti-party activities, with calls for his suspension or expulsion. However, Wike remains defiant, asserting, “No one will take me from the party. I’m a member.” His confidence stems from his financial contributions to the PDP and his control over Rivers State politics, making him an indispensable figure within the party despite his alignment with the APC.

The Political Strategy Behind Wike’s Dual Role

Wike’s declarations reflect a calculated political strategy aimed at maintaining relevance in both the PDP and APC camps. By pledging to lead the PDP campaign for 2027, Wike ensures he retains control over the party’s structure in Rivers State, a key battleground for any national election. Simultaneously, his support for Tinubu’s re-election positions him as a valuable asset to the APC, securing his influence in the federal government and potentially shielding him from political retribution within the PDP.

This dual strategy is not new for Wike. In 2023, he and the G-5 governors—comprising Seyi Makinde, Samuel Ortom, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi—worked against Atiku, contributing to the PDP’s electoral defeat. Their actions led to significant defections, such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s move to the APC, further weakening the PDP’s cohesion. Wike’s current stance suggests a continuation of this approach, aiming to keep the PDP divided while strengthening Tinubu’s coalition.

Moreover, Wike’s influence extends beyond Rivers State. As FCT Minister, he has overseen significant infrastructure projects, earning praise from Tinubu, who described him as “Mr. Infrastructure” and expressed hope that Wike’s efforts would translate into APC victories in the FCT in 2027. Wike’s ability to deliver results in the FCT, coupled with his political machine in Rivers, makes him a formidable player in Nigeria’s political arena.

Implications for the PDP and the 2027 Elections

Wike’s dual role poses significant challenges for the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 elections. The party is already grappling with internal crises, including leadership disputes and defections to the APC. Wike’s open support for Tinubu, combined with his refusal to leave the PDP, has fueled accusations that he is acting as a mole for the APC, undermining the opposition’s ability to present a united front.

The PDP’s failure to sanction Wike and other G-5 governors for their anti-party activities in 2023 has emboldened other PDP governors, such as Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, to publicly endorse Tinubu. This trend threatens to further erode the PDP’s credibility and electoral prospects. Political sociologist Abubakar Umar Kari noted, “The confusion largely centres on the role of Wike in the party, as well as the utterances of some PDP governors who have openly endorsed President Tinubu.”

Meanwhile, opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are exploring coalitions to challenge Tinubu in 2027. However, Wike’s influence within the PDP could hinder these efforts, particularly if he succeeds in installing loyalists in key party positions. The PDP’s ability to resolve its internal conflicts and present a credible candidate will be crucial to its chances in 2027, but Wike’s dual allegiance complicates this task.

Wike’s Influence in Rivers State Politics

Rivers State politics remains a critical factor in Wike’s strategy. As a former governor, Wike maintains significant control over the state’s political structure, despite tensions with his successor, Siminalayi Fubara. Wike has denied any personal conflict with Fubara, stating, “I don’t have any crisis with Fubara. I’m not the president who declared the state of emergency.” However, his influence over the APC’s Rivers State chapter, where a caretaker committee loyal to him has replaced one led by Tinubu’s rival Rotimi Amaechi, underscores his dominance.

Wike’s ability to deliver Rivers State for Tinubu in 2027 could be a game-changer, given the state’s electoral significance. In 2023, the APC polled 231,591 votes in Rivers, compared to the PDP’s 88,468, largely due to Wike’s support for Tinubu. His pledge to lead Tinubu’s campaign in Rivers suggests he aims to replicate or exceed this performance, leveraging his grassroots network and financial resources.

Challenges and Criticisms

Wike’s dual role has not gone unchallenged. Critics within the PDP, including Atiku’s camp, argue that his actions are designed to weaken the party and ensure Tinubu’s re-election. PDP youth spokesperson Dare Glintstone Akinniyi described Wike’s statements as an “embarrassment” and warned of a potential repeat of the G-5 crisis in 2027. Others, like Tom FredFish of the PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice, have called for the party to zone its presidential ticket to Wike to test his loyalty, suggesting that his refusal to contest would expose his true allegiance to Tinubu.

On social media platforms like X, sentiments are mixed. Some users praise Wike’s political acumen, with posts noting his “commitment to APC’s 2027 campaign” despite his PDP membership. Others question his mental stability, with one user sarcastically remarking, “Is there a mental issue somewhere that is yet to be discovered?” These reactions highlight the polarizing nature of Wike’s strategy and the uncertainty surrounding his intentions.

Conclusion: A High-Stakes Political Gamble

Nyesom Wike’s declaration to lead the PDP campaign for 2027 while supporting Tinubu’s re-election is a high-stakes gamble that reflects his mastery of political strategy. By straddling both the PDP and APC, Wike aims to maintain his relevance in Rivers State politics and national politics, positioning himself as an indispensable asset to both camps. However, this approach risks further fracturing the PDP and alienating its base, potentially paving the way for Tinubu’s victory in 2027.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, Wike’s actions will be closely watched. Will he succeed in delivering Rivers State and the FCT for Tinubu while maintaining his influence within the PDP? Or will his dual role backfire, leading to his isolation within the opposition? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: Wike’s bold moves have redefined the contours of Nigeria’s political landscape, making him a central figure in the battle for 2027.
